But did you know that hardly anyone in Mexico actually celebrates Cinco de Mayo, since it's not a federal holiday? A lot of people think that its the Mexican independence day, which it's not. In reality, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Mexico's independence day is actually the 16th of September.
